PARAMARIBO – Finance and Planning Minister Adelien Wijnerman recently expressed shock over the sudden resignation of Malty Dwarkasing as administrator general at the State Debt Bureau.
Dwarkasing reportedly handed her letter of resignation in last Friday afternoon. Minister Wijnerman who pointed out that the letter was handed in at the end of the work day stated that not a single reason was given by Dwarkasing for her departure. “It came completely unexpected,” said Minister Wijnerman who labeled the way things went down that day inappropriate because no motive for the decision was given. Shortly after news of the administrator general’s resignation had gone public many rumors started circulating. According to reliable sources, Dwarkasing did not approve of the presence of controversial figures who played a role in the financial policy and the management of the state debt.
Minister Wijnerman strongly rejected these reports. “That is not true because nobody was assigned to work with her at the ministry,” said Minister Wijnerman who added that the State Debt Bureau is taked with managing and monitoring the national debt. All of the requests for information go through the minister. “If the minister asks a person or multiple persons to speak to her, it is put in writing,” said Minister Wijnerman who added that transparency and consultations are essential within her department. “When I came into office I made it clear that we would collaborate.” The minister therefore deems it regrettable that Dwarkasing did not discuss her reasons for calling its quits with her. Minister Wijnerman made it clear that the sudden departure of a top official leaves many questions answered. “In these situations I find it very important for state employees to explain beforehand what is going on,” said Minister Wijnerman.
