Youth workers sound the alarm over rising youth crimes

PARAMARIBO – Representatives of various youth organizations recently expressed grave concern regarding the rising youth crimes in Suriname.

Dwight Samuel and Anouskha Plet pointed out that “it is an alarming trend and that especially students are often targeted by their peers.”

Samuel made it clear that “it is time for the government to take structural action to address the issue.” “Why doesn’t the government focus more intensively on awareness campaigns? Youths must come to realize that their actions have consequences,” said Samuel. The youth workers also urged parents and guardians to be more involved in the lives of their children. “If your child comes home with something that is unfamiliar to you, you must start asking questions. Try to find out where that thing came from,” said Samuel who added that prevention starts at home. Parents must spot the red flags and must not turn a blind eye when their child suddenly has a lot of money or expensive things. Plet expressed her disappointment over the fact that youths choose to rob others instead of earning an honest living. “There are many youths who work hard so that they can buy what they want. It is unacceptable that others choose the easy but wrong path,” said Plet. Samuel and Plet made it clear that parents must not hesitate when it comes to taking action whenever their child crosses the line. “Staying silent or hiding wrong behavior only makes the problem bigger. Sound the alarm on time in order to prevent the worse from happening,” said Plet. Samuel and Plet also urged the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Justice and Police to join forces so that they can address the issue more effectively.
