PARAMARIBO – Although the summer is often the time when kites appear in the sky, fewer children are spotted with a kite. It would seem that the once popular ‘sport’ is gradually turning into a thing of the past because a growing number of youths prefer to stay indoors to...
keep themselves busy with their laptop or smartphone instead of going outside to fly their kite. 11-year-old Jaden Irion is find of kites and makes his own kites. He keeps some of the kites and sells the rest to children who can’t make kites. The cheapest kite costs as little as SRD 35 but Jaden explained that even the low price does not seem to get youths interested in flying a kite. “The number of children who fly a kite is dropping,” said Jaden who added that his peers are glued to their screen of their smartphone or tablet and are not interested in outdoor activities. “Youths often choose screens instead of kites. It is summer and it is time to fly kites. Do not only play games on your phone or tablet but go outside to play with your friends,” said Jaden who misses the time when kites ruled the sky. “There used to be many kites in the sky,” said Jaden who feels nostalgic each summer. Jaden is happy that he still has friends who also share his love for kites. He and his friends enjoy making the sky colorful with their kites. Of course Jaden is also careful when he flies his kite. “I always look around to see if there are any utility cables in the area where I want to fly my kite. My kite could get caught in the cables.” Jaden hopes that flying kites will once again become popular among children. “It is fun, healthy and you learn a thing or two along the way.”
