US/ISRAEL – Israel could face “consequences” if it launches a ground assault on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, the US vice president has warned.
Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview that it would be a “huge mistake” for the Israeli military to move on the city. The comments appear to underscore the continued strain in relations between Washington and Israel as the latter’s war in Gaza continues.
The United States and other Israeli allies continue to warn against an assault on Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinian civilians are sheltering.
“We have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in Rafah would be a huge mistake,” Harris told ABC’s This Week.
“I have studied the maps – there’s nowhere for those folks to go. And we’re looking at about a million and a half people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there,” Harris added.
“I am ruling out nothing,” Harris said when she was asked whether there would be consequences from the US if the Israeli operation in the overcrowded city goes ahead.
She did not give details of what such consequences might entail. “We’re going to take it one step at a time, but we’ve been very clear in terms of our perspective on whether or not that should happen,” she said.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that a major ground assault on the town of Rafah would be “a mistake” and “unnecessary”.
Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on the Palestinian territory since Hamas attacked it on October 7, killing about 1,200 and taking over 200 people captive.
The Israeli military has also imposed a crippling blockade that has left much of the population on the verge of starvation.
More than 32,200 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive and over 74,500 injured. Approximately 1.5 million Palestinians have now been pushed into Rafah.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Blinken’s comments by insisting that Israel is working on ways to evacuate civilians from combat zones and to address the humanitarian needs of Gaza.
“I also said that we have no way to defeat Hamas without entering Rafah,” Netanyahu added. “I told him that I hope we would do this with US support but if necessary we will do it alone.”
Resistance to US support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza continues to grow. Last Friday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on the US to suspend weapons transfers to Israel.
The US is Israel’s top weapons supplier. Washington provides at least $3.8bn in aid to Israel annually, and Biden is working with Congress to secure another $14billion.
Public opinion polls, however, show that the Biden administration’s steadfast support for Israel may cost the president votes as the election season gets under way, and Biden and key Democrats have in recent weeks been more forceful in their criticism of the Israeli government siege of Gaza.
However, White House officials insist that Washington will not halt its weapon transfers to Israel, and insist that they share Israel’s goal of eliminating Hamas in Gaza.(Al Jazeera)…[+]

Ecuador’s youngest mayor shot dead amid battle against gang violence
QUITO – Ecuador’s youngest mayor, Brigitte Garcia, was shot dead inside a vehicle, according to the National Police.
The mayor of San Vicente, a city in western Ecuador’s Manabi province, was found dead along with Jairo Loor, an advisor and director of communication for the local government.
“Inside the car, ballistic evidence was collected” by forensic experts, the National Police said, adding that an investigation was underway to determine how and why the killings took place.
The mayor, the youngest politician in the country at the age of 27, was a member of the Citizen Revolution Movement led by former President Rafael Correa.
The killings came at a time when Ecuador is waging a battle against organized crime.
The country has declared a state of emergency and an “internal armed conflict” as it tries to dismantle 22 criminal gangs identified by the government as “terrorists” behind an unprecedented wave of violence.
Garcia is the second official murdered in Manabi in recent months. In July 2023, Agustin Intriago, mayor of Manta, was killed while touring one of the city’s neighborhoods.

Dodental noodweer Brazilië stijgt naar minstens 25, hulpdiensten vrezen voor meer slachtoffers
BRAZILIЁ – Als gevolg van hevige stormen en aanhoudende regen in het zuidoosten van Brazilië, zijn al minstens 25 mensen om het leven gekomen. Vooral deelstaten Espírito Santo en Rio de Janeiro zijn zwaar getroffen. De hulpdiensten waren nog altijd bezig om slachtoffers te bevrijden.
De gouverneur van Espírito Santo, waar het dodental intussen op 17 ligt, spreekt van een “chaotische situatie” in Mimoso do Sul, een stadje van ongeveer 25.000 inwoners. Vijftien mensen verdronken er door overstromingen en verwacht wordt dat het aantal slachtoffers nog zal toenemen.
Afgelopen zondag is het water wat gezakt. Hierdoor kunnen de hulpdiensten in zones komen die ervoor nog ontoegankelijk waren, aldus de gouverneur. Meer dan 5.400 mensen werden door de civiele bescherming al in veiligheid gebracht.
Op luchtbeelden is te zien hoe volledige wijken van de stad onder water staan, waarbij enkel nog de daken boven het water uitsteken. Verschillende voertuigen, waaronder ook een brandweerwagen, zijn meegesleurd door de sterke stroming.
In buurstaat Rio de Janeiro ligt het dodental momenteel op acht. De meeste slachtoffers kwamen om door modderstromen in bergachtig terrein. In de toeristische stad Petrópolis viel meer dan 300 liter regen op 24 uur tijd. Verschillende mensen stierven bij een aardverschuiving. Een meisje van vier jaar oud werd nog wel uit een ingestort huis bevrijd.

Brits filmpje op social media moet migranten afschrikken naar VK te komen
ENGELAND – De Britse overheid is een campagne op sociale media begonnen om migranten ervan te weerhouden met kleine bootjes vanuit Noord-Frankrijk het Kanaal over te steken. Met filmpjes op Facebook en YouTube worden met name Vietnamezen gewezen op de gevaren die ze lopen tijdens de overtocht.
In de video’s komen mensen aan het woord die eerder de boottocht hebben gemaakt. “De berichten op sociale media benadrukken de gevolgen van het illegaal reizen naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk, de gevaren die mensen kunnen verwachten en de risico’s van schulden en uitbuiting door mensensmokkelbendes”, laat het Britse ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken weten. Ook wordt gewezen op wat het betekent om in Groot-Brittannië te verblijven als illegaal, zonder toegang tot sociale voorzieningen.
De afgelopen maanden is het aantal migranten dat het Kanaal oversteekt met 15 procent gestegen ten opzichte van dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Een steeds groter deel van hen komt uit Vietnam. Oppositiekandidaat Senegal aan de leiding na eerste verkiezingsuitslagen
SENEGAL – De eerste uitslagen van de presidentsverkiezingen in Senegal pakken goed uit voor de belangrijkste kandidaat van de oppositie. Bassirou Diomaye Faye gaat in de voorlopige resultaten aan de leiding en is door zeker zeven andere presidentskandidaten gefeliciteerd.
Op de kieslijst stonden negentien deelnemers, maar de strijd ging vooral tussen Diomaye en oud-premier Ba. Laatstgenoemde kreeg de zegen van aftredend president Macky Sall, die aan het einde van zijn tweede termijn zit en zich daarom niet meer verkiesbaar mocht stellen.
De vraag is nu of Diomaye voldoende stemmen heeft gekregen om een tweede ronde te voorkomen. Daarvoor heeft hij de absolute meerderheid nodig. De officiële uitslag van de verkiezingen wordt in de loop van de week verwacht.
Diomaye kwam anderhalve week geleden vrij uit de gevangenis, net als de bekendere oppositieleider Ousmane Sonko. Die werd al eens derde bij de presidentsverkiezingen, maar mocht dit keer niet meedoen vanwege een veroordeling in een verkrachtingszaak. Zijn aanhang noemt dat een politiek proces. Met de campagneleus ‘Diomaye Mooy Sonko’ (Diomaye is Sonko) probeerde de oppositie kiezers over te halen om op Sonko’s rechterhand te stemmen.
De oppositie richt zich op jongeren die verandering willen in het land. In Senegal is 60 procent van de bevolking jonger dan 25 jaar en in die groep is veel onvrede vanwege werkloosheid, inflatie en een gebrek aan perspectief. Diomaye heeft beloofd een einde te maken aan de corruptie en het land weer in rustiger vaarwater te brengen.
De afgelopen jaren werden protesten tegen het beleid van Sall met harde hand neergeslagen. Daarbij vielen zeker zestig doden. De afgelopen tijd laaide de onrust weer op door een decreet van de president. Hij besloot de verkiezingen uit te stellen van 25 februari naar 15 december, tot woede van de oppositie en demonstranten. Several dead, 1,000 homes destroyed in Papua New Guinea earthquake
PAPUA NEW GUINEA – Several people have died and some 1,000 homes have been destroyed in a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit a remote part of western Papua New Guinea, according to officials.
The quake rocked the East Sepik region at about 6:20am last Sunday (20:20 GMT on Saturday) near the town of Ambunti, about 756km (470 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird wrote on Facebook that the tremor had “damaged most parts of the province”.
“Sadly we have several casualties already,” he said, adding that authorities were “still assessing the impact” but about 1,000 homes had so far been “lost”.
Early reports put the death toll to at least three, while provincial police commander Christopher Tamari told the AFP news agency yesterday that at least five deaths had been recorded and warned the number could be higher as rescue efforts continued.
Dozens of villages located on the banks of the country’s Sepik River were already battling widespread flooding from earlier in March when the quake struck.
Photos showed damaged wooden houses with thatched roofs collapsing into the surrounding knee-high floodwaters, while an ageing bridge in the provincial capital of Wewak buckled under the strain.
“The flooding actually covers an area more than 800km (497 miles) long, and so there’s about maybe 60 or 70 villages involved all along the Sepik River,” Bird told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation yesterday.
“The floods weren’t their biggest problem. They were confidently dealing with that because it’s something they’re used to,” Bird said. “It was the earthquake that no one was prepared for. That would have caused the most significant damage now.”
Bird said there was a pressing need to get medical supplies, clean drinking water and temporary shelter into the disaster zone.
Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on top of the seismic “Ring of Fire” – an arc of intense tectonic activity that stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

Verdachten aanslag Moskou gehavend voor rechter, aangeklaagd voor terrorisme
RUSLAND – De vier verdachten van de aanslag op een concertgebouw in Moskou zijn voor de rechter verschenen. Daar kregen de verdachten te horen dat ze in afwachting van hun proces tot zeker 22 mei in voorarrest zitten.
De vier mannen worden aangeklaagd wegens terrorisme. Daar staat in Rusland een levenslange gevangenisstraf op. De periode van hun voorarrest kan nog verlengd worden.
De rechtbank van Basmanni, een district in Moskou, heeft eerder laten weten dat zeker twee verdachten schuld hebben bekend.
Het Russische ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken meldde zaterdag dat de verdachten “allemaal buitenlandse staatsburgers” zijn. Zeker een van hen zou uit Tadzjikistan komen.
Op beelden is te zien dat drie van de verdachten geboeid en voorovergebogen de rechtszaal in worden gebracht.
Een vierde verdachte zat in ziekenhuiskleren in een rolstoel. Hij leek zijn bewustzijn te verliezen en leek een oog te missen, schrijft persbureau Reuters. Alle vier zagen ze er zwaar gehavend uit. Ze hadden verwondingen en zwellingen in hun gezicht.
Het Kremlin wil nog niks kwijt over de mogelijk hardhandige behandeling van verdachten. “Ik laat deze vraag onbeantwoord”, reageerde een regeringswoordvoerder.
Naast de vier vermoedelijke schutters zijn ook enkele andere personen gearresteerd. De Russische president Vladimir Poetin beloofde zaterdag alle daders op te sporen en te arresteren.
