PARAMARIBO – Stichting 1 voor 12 on Tuesday donated the wheelchair bus that has been paid for in full to Huize Tyltyl. The donation was made possible by the chairman of the foundation, ...
Louis Vismale, and donors from Suriname and other countries.
Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) Minister Diana Pokie who also attended this special occasion made it clear that the government has to take care of this target group. She explained that the ministry has asked the foundation for collaboration as the foundation is already active in the field.
Minister Pokie pointed out that she was unaware that the pupils at Huize Tyltyl had to be carried in normal buses and that she was happy to learn that that will be a thing of the past thanks to the donation of a wheelchair bus. She made it clear that the current subsidies for shelters and the people who work at these shelters for people with an impairment is ridiculously low. The shelters currently receives a subsidy of SRD 70 per pupil per day and the workers receive
SRD 85 for each day that they perform labor. She announced that this figures would be raised and that a proposal that would make it possible to give a raise would be presented to the Council of Ministers for approval. Vismale announced that he would personally cover the salary of a driver for the first two months because the children's home currently does not have its own driver. He urged the ministry to accept this responsibility. Rita Kruiner, director at Huize Tyltyl, expressed her gratitude and explained that whenever Vismale visited the children's home he always witnessed how they had to be carried into normal buses and that he promised to help them purchase a wheelchair bus. “We did not expect the bus to arrive this fast. We are very grateful that we got it in such a short time,” said Kruiner.
