YAOUNDE - At least 17 people were killed Thursday evening in clashes in Chad, local authorities and media reported Friday.
The violence occurred in the village of Oregomel, located in the Mayo-Kebbi West province in the southwest of the country. According to local media, most of the victims were women and children. Sixteen others were injured in the clashes, in which fighters were reportedly armed with machetes and clubs. On Friday, the government's general delegate to the Mayo-Kebbi West province, Abdelmanane Khatab, announced new measures to curb insecurity in the region after visiting the affected village. The clashes took place just hours after Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno held an emergency security meeting in response to recent deadly violence in the country. According to local reports, more than 50 people have died in intercommunal clashes in Chad since May. These conflicts are common and are often driven by disputes over land and political differences.
