Times of Suriname

Judge Shanti Bikhari reportedly ruled in favor of F.E/S.S and  R.P/M.B and ordered the state to execute the verdicts within seven days. After the seven days the state will initially have to pay a fine which starts at SRD 10,000 but which can rise until SRD 1 million.

The four plaintiffs were married abroad and went to the CBB upon their return to Suriname. But when they presented their marriage certificates to the CBB, they were turned away because the CBB refused to register their marriage. Judge Ingrid Lachitjaran explained to the press that the judge has only announced a verdict in the case of these 2 married couples. It is officially the first time that married couples of the same-sex have requested to be registered in the books at the CBB. The judge who handled this case also instructed the state to adapt its laws which are currently in violation with international treaties that were ratified. The verdict was based on these international treaties.
