GUYANA - The six men who were remanded earlier this month for terrorism were released on bail last Wednesday when they all appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown...
Magistrates’ Court. The defendants are: 18-year-old Marvin Sears of Lot 1 Smythe and Durban Streets, Georgetown, 23-year-old Jamal Cornette of Lot 77 Farm Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), 25-year-old Kevin Thomas of Lot 63 Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, 38-year-old Dion Norville of Sussex Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, 21-year-old Shamar Ross of Lot 1667 Westminster Street, West Bank Demerara (WBD), and 21-year-old Shane Burnette of Lot 1791 Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
During their first court appearance on May 2, 2025, the men were not required to plead. However, during Wednesday’s court hearing, the men all pleaded not guilty to the charge. It is alleged that on April 28, 2025, at Georgetown, the defendants committed a terrorist act by riding their motorcycles at a fast rate, weaving in and out of traffic in a dangerous manner, occupying both driving lanes in large groups along the roadways.
It was reported that the prosecution had objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence and the defendants’ actions causing destruction across the country, causing flights to be cancelled, and schools and businesses to close their doors due to fear. At the initial court hearing Sears was represented by attorney Domnick Bess, while Cornette, Thomas, Norville, Ross and Burnette were represented by attorney Darren Wade. Bess had indicated to the court that on the night in question, his client was arrested on Smythe Street and he was not in the company of his fellow co-defendants. He reassured the court that his client was not a part of any group.
Meanwhile, Wade had reassured the court of his client’s innocence and asked how his clients could be charged with terrorism for driving in two lanes. He added that there are traffic charges for that and on that ground, he requested that all six accused be released on self-bail. Last Wednesday, attorneys Bess and Wade represented Burnette, while attorneys Dexter Smartt and Bess represented Sears and Cornette. Thomas, Norville, and Ross were represented by attorney Wade.
