PARAMARIBO - Investigators from the Herman E. Gooding Police Station recently solved the case of more than 4,0000 bags of milk powder that vanished at Melkcentrale Paramaribo (MCP).
The stolen milk powder has a street value of about SRD 17,1 million. On August 29th the milk powder was reported stolen at the Herman E. Gooding Police Station. Investigators started looking for clues immediately and questioned several workers but no arrests were made. When a worker was questioned again last Friday he made a few incriminating statements which led to the arrest of 8 people including 2 women. A.M. (31), M.G. (49), B.A. (31), R.S. (46), R.V. (37), S.A. (26), S.V. (33) and S.R. (32) are currently in jail. One of the suspects works as a deputy director at the MCP. One of the suspects was reportedly released. Another worker of the MCP was arrested last Saturday after a third round of questioning also implicated him in the theft case. Investigators managed to uncover a close collaboration in the theft scheme between the warehouse manager and other people who worked in the warehouse but also with the personnel of other divisions such as production, administration and finance. Many bags of milk powder were loaded into trucks before being sold to local retailers. The shortage in the stock room were camouflaged by workers from the finance department so that no ody would be any wiser. The police did not rule out the possibility that more arrests could follow.
