PARAMARIBO - The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture recently announced that the rules for passing to the next grade have been revised for the 9th and the 11th graders in the AVO system.
After school principals had expressed their concerns regarding the current rules and guidelines which are no longer compatible with the reality of their schools, the ministry decided to make a few changes. As a result of the new rules, the students from the 9th and the 11th grade can have another shot at proceeding to the next grade. The Education Ministry announced that students with only one insufficient mark on their report card can pass to the next grade if that insufficient mark is not lower than 3. Students who are just 1 or 2 points away from passing because of one or two subjects that are taught automatically get the chance to take another test or two.
Parents applauded the minister's decision to revise the rules but also pointed out that a solution is also needed for the students in the 10th grade who got good grades throughout the entire school year but who failed the state exam and who therefore have to redo the 10th grade. The nation’s teachers once again complained that decisions were made without their consent. They also complained that they have to work additional days in the summer vacation. “We already have our hands full with the re-exams for the 12th graders and now we also have to take care of the resits for the 9th and the 11th graders,” said a concerned teacher. Several teachers explained that they are in favor of a system where they get their summer vacation days back in the next school year.
