Vandals on Saturday managed to break into a unit of the Telecommunication Company Suriname (Telesur) which is lo-cated in the Amerindian village of Apoera.
About a month ago a telecom mast that is 200 meters long and that is located in the Patamacca region was destroyed.
“The damage is huge in both cases,” said Jennis Asraf, manager of Corporate Communication at Telesur, to this medium. Asraf is puzzled by the fact that people purposely target telecom equipment. She explained that last Saturday the vandals not only made off with valuable equipment but that they also caused a lot of damage by smashing the things that were left behind. As a result of the damage, the customers who live in the Apoera region no longer have access to the internet. Asraf pointed out that the damage that was caused at Apoera is estimated to be around $ 30,000. “Yes, telecom equipment is very expensive. Equipment must be bought again before being transported to the area for installation. And that could take a while,” said the manager who added that Telesur was also targeted by vandals in the Patamacca region not so long ago. The vandals evidently sawed through a cable which caused a telecom mast to collapse. In order to provide access to the customers in the Patamacca region, Telesur rerouted its services. It will also take some time to put a new mast in that area. “A huge investment must be made to repair everything there. Between $ 700,000 and $ 900,000 is needed,” said the manager who added that Telesur has already reported the vandalism and theft to the police.
