CHINA - A Chinese university has announced the expulsion of a female student for “damaging national dignity” after she was accused of “improper interactions”...
with a foreign man, sparking heated debate across Chinese social media over whether the university’s actions went too far.
In recent days, the decision has drawn thousands of comments on platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. Many users have questioned whether the school has the authority to judge her personal life and escalate it into a matter of national concern.
In a statement released earlier, Dalian Polytechnic University, located in the country’s northeast, declared that the student would be expelled within 60 days, claiming she violated a school regulation prohibiting “improper interactions with foreigners that damage national dignity.”
“Your misconduct on December 16, 2024, caused a severe negative impact,” the statement read, without elaborating on what the “misconduct” entailed. The university publicly disclosed the student’s name, but AP is withholding it for privacy reasons.
The university’s decision highlights broader issues emerging in modern Chinese society, including debates over gender bias and the growing push toward nationalism. (Jamaica Gleaner)
