PARAMARIBO – The Central Main Polling Bureau (CHS) on Tuesday presented the official results of the general elections of May 2025 at a public session that was held in the Chamber of Commerce (KKF).
It announced the names of the candidates that were elected to become members of parliament, the local district councils and the local resort councils. The CHS also discussed the complaints that were filed because of things that went wrong on Election Day, May 25th. “After a thorough investigation and after having consulted the police, the CHS has concluded that despite many reports that were processed one by one there are no indications that fraud was committed or that attempts were made to manipulate the results.
We notified the police of all of the cases of suspected manipulation and they conducted their investigation. Things did not go smoothly and the CHS therefore agrees with the deputy minister of Home Affairs when he says that the electoral process of Suriname requires improvement,” said the chairman of the CHS, Lilawatie Punwasi-Raghoebier. The chairman of the CHS called on all of the nation’s political parties to respect the official result of the elections and to keep Suriname’s image clean. The new members of parliament are scheduled to convene in June 29th. “We will draw up and send all of the necessary documents to them so that they have more than enough time to accept their duty. If they do not accept it, we will look for the person who is next in line on the list of candidates so that we can give that person the parliamentary seat,” said the deputy chairwoman of the CHS, Wendy Jap-A-Joe. All eyes are now on the Independent Election Bureau (OKB) because it has to declare the election results binding.
