PARAMARIBO - Citizens are turning to social media to express their disbelief over the fact that drugs, money, jewelry and smartphones that were seized by the police were stolen from under the nose of the Police Force Suriname (KPS).
revelations come after Police Commissioner Bryan Isaacs had criticized attorney Jennifer van Dijk-Silos at a press conference over her statements regarding a so-called cocaine army that exists within the police force. Commissioner Isaacs strongly rejected this claim but in light of the recent revelations public opinion has turned against him. Citizens have made it clear on social media that the commissioner can no longer keep denying the claims regarding a so-called cocaine army. The fact that the police force currently remains silent is only fueling the distrust and feeling of injustice among citizens. The thefts took place several months ago but were kept quiet. This raises a lot of questions regarding the transparency within the police force. Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath has already announced a thorough investigation into these thefts. He pointed out that it is not uncommon for things such as drugs to vanished into thin air although those things are being guarded by the police. The growing outrage on social media has made it clear that the reputation of the police has suffered a huge blow and that the police can only save face by tracking down and arresting those responsible for the thefts. Several weeks ago Commissioner Isaacs claimed that the reputation of the police force was wrong fully being tainted but the revelations have made it that much harder for his statements to seem credible.
