Diesel generators in dozens of villages to be replaced by solar energy

PARAMARIBO - The Energy Company Suriname  (EBS) will visit dozens of remote villages that are not connected to the power grid to replace the diesel generators with solar energy.

Times of Suriname

It has made an international call for tenders in order to carry out its hinterland solar energy, battery storage and water infrastructure program. The first tender is aimed at 10 Amerindian villages where 11 energy systems and 11 water systems must be constructed.  Kwamalasamutu, Apetina en Tutu Kampu, Pelelu Tepu, Palumeu, Alalapadu, Kawemhakan, Sipaliwini, Coeroeni, Amatopo and Kumakapan are part of the first phase for the solar PV-BESS mini-grid system. The project which will require solar panels to be installed and connected to batteries for storage will reportedly require 30 months. The EBS will also focus on providing energy to the Matawai region. Five clusters that consist of 16 Matawai communities and the Duwatra-Bekiokondre region will be included in the second program that is expected to require about 24 months for installation. Bethel, Pusugrunu, Tevreden, Sukibaka, Pijetie, Padua, Boslanti, Pniel, Wanhati, Vertrouw, Misalibi, Nieuw Jacobkondre, Baling and  Bilawatra will receive solar energy. Many isolated villages currently rely on diesel generators for electricity. A local solar energy system will not only provide an alternative but it will also improve the availability of electricity. Mini-grids make it possible to generate and store energy locally without having to rely on a nationwide power grid. Part of the project is being financed by the IDB.
