Last Wednesday 14-year-old  DM  and two friends went swimming in a swamp located along the Hoeksteenstraat. The two friends are experienced swimmers who often went to this location for a swim. DM reportedly performed a stunt while jumping from a tree into the water. He fell in a deep section of the water and disappeared in the water. His friends realized that he was in trouble and tried to save him but they could not bring him back to shore so they asked an adult to provide assistance. When the adult arrived DM had already disappeared in the depth. Local residents and relatives then started looking for the boy in the water. A relative eventually located the body and pulled it out of the water. Efforts to reanimate the boy proved unsuccessful. The KPS explained that swimming in open water is dangerous as there could be obstacles, deep holes or other dangers beneath the surface. Parents are advised to keep an eye on their children when they go swimming. The police force also advises against performing stunts near locations where people swim. Even experienced swimmers are being urged to remain cautious. The police force advises people to opt for safe locations to go for a swim as there are always lifeguards present.
