PARAMARIBO - Sandiep Seemangal, the entrepreneur who in 2020 had requested a piece of land near the jetty at Leonsberg and who had received it...

from the previous government, told Times of Suriname that he has filed a lawsuit against the current government because the official deed was revoked. He explained that “this is the third time that a piece of land that was allocated to him has been taken back by the state. “I will not let it go this time and I will also conpel the government to compensate me for the costs that I had to cover namely $150,000,” said the entrepreneur who added that he has suffered huge financial losses. Seemangal hopes that the judge will handle his lawsuit in the proper manner. “The government allocated that location to me which is why I find it inconvenient that this keeps happening,” said Seemangal who added that “it is difficult for entrepreneurs to make investments in Suriname. The piece of land near the jetty is of huge importance to the local economy because for dozens of years it has been used by boat owners, fishermen and tourist agencies. “It is discouraging to have to fight against and again for something that was allocated to me by the government. Land and Forest Management (GBB) Minister Stanley Soeropawiro made it clear that the land in question should never have been allocated to another party. He explained that the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) had advised against it but that the then government ignored the advice and allocated it to a private individual anyway.
