PARAMARIBO – Foreign Affairs, International Trade and International Collaboration (BIS) Minister Melvin Bouva recently made it clear that Xaviera Jessurun worked...

independently as chief of staff at the Organization of American States (OAS) as there was no relationship whatsoever between Jessurun and Suriname. He also made it clear that the issue must not be exagerrated because Jessurun did not work at the OAS as a representative of Suriname. Minister Bouva acknowledged that the issue could have consequences for the image of Suriname because it is about somebody who has ties with Suriname. He referred to the previous warning that were issued to emphasize how Suriname handles people who carry out orders on behalf of the country or have officials documents of the state. Minister Bouva confirmed that the government has received an official report that the diplomatic visa of Jessurun has been revoked by US officials. He explained that the United States of America made the decision based on several reasons. The Surinamese government distances itself from every formal involvement of the former OAS official. Minister Bouva pointed out that Jessurun had not been assigned to the OAS by the Surinamese government and that she had applied for a job there personally. Jessurun recently issued a statement, indicating that she had no other choice then to hand in her resignation. She made it clear that a certain OAS member state had used its influence to get her visa and immunity revoked. According to Jessurun, it was no longer possibile for her to keep working at the OAS due to the pressure that was being put on her.
