Minister André Misiekaba made it clear that each case is “one too many.” “The numbers from the police show that this is a reason for us to be concerned. This issue has shocked the nation,” said Minister Misiekaba who added that he planned on urgently tackling the issue nationwide. “We must worry but at the same time we must also formulate an effective policy. We are looking at what must be done.” One of the steps that has already been taken was the activation of a helpline namely 114 on June 5th. The people who are on standby at this helpline provide professional advice. Minister Misiekaba urged people with problems to call this number. He emphasized that “it is not a magic potion but that there are experts who will lend you their ear. “They can refer you to the places where you can get the help that you need,” said Minister Misiekaba. The Health Ministry is also addressing the bullying at school issue. Minister Misiekaba referred to the 123 helpline which is also known as the Mi Line of Stichting Kinder- en Jongerentelefoon but added that children can also dial 114 if they want to. He has also discussed the bullying issue with Education, Science and Culture Minister Dirk Currie so that it can be addressed more effectively. The main objective is to assign specialized social workers to detect strange behavior among children at an early stage. There are already several social workers who are commonly referred to as care workers stationed at a few schools but Minister Misiekaba explained that they must be given more tools. Minister Misiekaba pointed out that people no longer steer clear from the Psychiatric Center Suriname and that the head of the PCS has reported that a growing number of people are visiting the PCS to seek help. He also pointed out, however, that the mindset of the nation must change as they must start to realize that mental health is just as important as physical health. Minister Misiekaba made it clear that he wants clear rules on the sale of chemicals because people often opt to use chemicals to take their own life. He will therefore discuss the issue with Economic Affairs Minister Andrew Baasaron as he also wants to know how chemicals enter the country.
