PARAMARIBO – The National Immunization Program (NIP) of the Public Health Bureau (BOG) recently condemned recent news reports which suggested that a huge quantity of flu shots are expired.

According to the NIP, these news reports are not based on facts because of the about one thousand flu vaccines that were available for the flu season of 2025-2026 only about two hundred are expired. The BOG made it clear that the influenza vaccine is given annually as protection against the flu viruses that are expected to circulate during the upcoming flu season. The vaccine is adjusted each year due to the fact that the flu viruses are constantly mutating. It is aimed at preventing hospital admissions and medical complications as a result of the influenza especially when it comes to senior citizens, young children, pregnant women and people with a weak immunity system or chronic disease. The vaccine is not intended for people who are already sick. Each year the NIP provides the flu shots free of charge to hospitals, private clinics, the RGD, the MZ and the Medical Center of the Public Health Bureau. The statistics indicate that there is an annual demand of about one thousand flu shots. This year eight hundred people were given a flu shot. The remaining flu shots expired after the 2025-2026 flu season.
