than two years local residents have complained about the moped riders who assemble in the Wilhelminastraat and who stop in front of private residencies where they produce a lot of noise. He explained that “it is not true that the police and neighbourhood managers do not take action against nuisances in residential areas”. According to Feller, multiple mopeds have been seized. The police will once again carry out inspections on the streets in the next couple of days. Moped riders who do not stick to the rules will face the consequences. “It is often said that the police do not work or that the neighbourhood manager does not do anything. But I can assure you that we have addressed the issue”, said Feller who added that the police operate in accordance with the existing legislation. Noise polluters are given a fine of SRD 1,500 for their first violation. There is a fine of SRD 2,500 for the second violation and the moped is also impounded for a longer period. When the person is caught and charged a third time he or she is given a fine of SRD 3,500 and the moped is impounded before being put up for auction. Feller made it clear that the youths are not the only ones to be blamed for their actions as their parents must also accept responsibility for their actions because they are the ones who purchase the moped for their children. In some cases the moped is modified so that it can produce more noise. “When the police take action and seize the moped the parents show up at the police station and ask if the moped can be given back. The parents claim that the moped is needed for their child to go to school”, said Feller. “The parents have an important role when it comes to parenting. It is up to the government to formulate a policy aimed at tackling the issue. We can only tackle the nuisance in the neighbourhoods by working together”, said Feller.
