Police take action against people who broadcast criminal acts via social media

PARAMARIBO – The police recently took firm action against people who used digital tools such as social media to commit serious crimes. Several suspects were tracked down and arrested for their actions which crossed the line.

AS who had made announced via his Facebook page on Sunday, March 1st, 2026 that he had dreamt that a cartel would be established to start a war against the police was arrested. The authorities deemed this announcement very serious as it poses a possible threat to the national security. The digital detectives identified the suspect with assistance from the CIU before tracking down his whereabouts and arresting him. Police officers from the Capital Crimes Division arrested BA for defamation and making threats against a government official. During the course of the investigation into became evident that the government official was being followed and recorded with smartphones. The videos were then put on TikTok. The victim was placed in a negative spotlight because he was accused of several activities. One of the people who recorded his movements also filmed his house during a live broadcast via TikTok. The suspect also threatened to kill the official and setting fire to his house. AS and BA are currently in jail awaiting trial.
