PARAMARIBO – After President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons was sworn into office on Wednesday, she gave a serious warning to her team of ministers and deputy ministers.
“Orders must come straight from the president and not from a third party,” said President Simons after the installation of her ministers and three deputy ministers. The nation’s first ever female president also emphasized the importance of a tight and transparent government team. “I wish for us to form one team where we determine the policy together and where the ministers carry out the policy.” President Simons who is also the first woman to lead the National Democratic Party (NDP) also made it clear to her team that nobody from her Office or from a political party or other third party has the authorization to give them orders in het namelijk. “You will get your orders from me as president or from the government. If you do not get it straight from my mouth, you will get it on paper with my signature. Nobody else can ask you anything in my name,” said the new president who urged her ministers to spread this message within their own political party, family and surroundings. “Let it be clear that nobody may use your name to get things done. Stu k to the law and the rules which help us to implement an honest policy just as we promised the nation,” said President Simons who had previously announced a zero tolerance policy on corruption and abuse of power as she wants to strengthen the faith that people have in her administration. The new team of ministers consists of 17 ministers but 15 were installed last Wednesday because Dirk Currie who will become the new minister of Education, Science and Culture is currently abroad. The nation still does not have a new minister of Public Works. Stephen Tsang (NDP) who has already worked as a legislator and a minister in the past and who was also present at the Presidential Palace last Wednesday told Times of Suriname that “I am interested in a ministerial position.”
