PARAMARIBO - The Public Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday requested a 10-year prison sentence for 37-year-old N.B., who is on trial for raping a defenseless patient in a hospital in Paramaribo.
The prosecutor told the court that “this is a serious and shocking crime” and emphasized that the victim was unable to defend herself.
According to the prosecution, the suspect broke into the hospital at night on March 6 and went straight to the female ward on the first floor. He targeted a woman with both mental and physical impairments. “She cannot speak and is bedridden due to medical reasons,” the prosecutor said. A nurse making her rounds discovered the intruder on top of the victim and immediately raised the alarm. The suspect fled but was arrested later that night when he was spotted again on the hospital premises.
The prosecutor stated that witness testimony and security camera footage prove that the suspect was present in the hospital that night. The witness statement was also submitted as evidence. The victim was unable to give a statement due to her impairments, but her condition and situation were thoroughly documented by investigators. “The victim was in a medical facility for treatment when this happened to her. The suspect exploited her defenselessness solely to satisfy his own lust,” the prosecutor concluded.
