Henk Ramnandanlal recently assured the nation that the political bloc known as OPTSU has not fallen apart despite the departure of the Surinamese Labor Party (SPA).
He explained to Times of Suriname OPTSU currently consists of five political parties namely Wi Sranan, De Nieuwe, Wind, the Sociaal Democratische Unie(SDU), the Progressieve Arbeiders en Landbouw Unie (PALU) and the Permanente Voorspoed Republiek Suriname (PVRS). “If a party exits the bloc that does not mean that OPTSU has collapsed. The work within the combination will continue. The initiators still fully support OPTSU,” Ramnandanlal, spokesman of OPTSU, told Times of Suriname. Ramnandanlal explained that the remaining member parties will put together the lists of candidates for a position in parliament or a post on the district or resort council. All of the political parties that will run for office must hand in their lists at the CHS and the main polling bureau in the districts on March 25th. Some adjustments are required now that the SPA is no longer onboard. “We deem it regrettable when political parties walk away,” said Ramnandanlal who made it clear that
OPTSU is still the better alternative for voters at the upcoming elections. Ramnandanlal pointed out that the political bloc could give the old political parties a run for their money. Last week the SPA announced its exit from OPTSU and explained that OPTSU member parties had made negative statements about the SPA which is why the trust was violated.
