PARAMARIBO – Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath recently indicated that the results of Traffic Safety Month (TSM) are disappointing.
Despite numerous traffic checks and awareness campaigns, traffic accidents claimed five lives during the TSM, which ran from August 15 to September 15. As always, the objective of the TSM is to reduce the number of road fatalities. Minister Monorath emphasized that every road death is one too many. “The ideal situation is one in which we have zero road deaths, or at least fewer fatalities,” said Monorath, who added that stricter enforcement of traffic rules will continue after the TSM.
Monorath noted that the visibility of police in traffic has led drivers in some neighborhoods to refrain from speeding. He therefore advocates tighter regulations for mopeds, as these vehicles are often involved in traffic accidents. “In Brazil, a driver’s license is even required for this type of vehicle. When we see an average of seven moped accidents per day, it is time to start tightening the rules,” said the minister. He added that road safety requires a structural approach. Monorath pointed out that the Safe City Program should contribute to traffic safety due to its network of cameras at strategic locations.
