Richano Santokhi was arrested last Tuesday upon arrival at the Johan Adolf Pengel (JAP) International Airport. Reports indicate that Santokhi was charged with defamation. The arrest was made after the current attorney general had pressed charges against him at the police. Shortly after his arrest Chandrikapersad Santokhi, former president and current chairman of the VHP party, urged the nation to wait patiently for the results of the investigation. “I wish to emphasize that I am waiting for the results of the investigation. Justice must prevail. I am confident that the authorities will do their job independently and thoroughly,” said Santokhi who is currently a member of parliament. The former president labeled the situation painful and requested privacy for his son and his family.
