Health, Welfare and Labor Minister André Misiekaba revealed that several nurses have personally told him that they are living under difficult circumstances and that they are therefore thinking about returning to Suriname. During his visit to the Netherlands Minister Misiekaba talked to a group of Surinamese health workers. Although he only talked to about twelve to thirteen people, he got a clear picture of the problems that Surinamese nationals experience in the Dutch healthcare sector. One of the problems is the fact that intermediary organizations that recruit Surinamese nurses for Dutch institutions do not stick to agreements regarding salary and housing. Some of the nurses receive less money than what was promised to them and they also end up living under bad circumstances. The nurses whom the minister spoke to and who want to return to Suriname asked the minister for financial aid so that they can buy a ticket and rent a house in Suriname. Minister Misiekaba made it clear to them that the government cannot cover those expenses. The government is prepared to assist nurses who return to Suriname in making a fresh start. The nurses who can pay for their ticket and hosting can count on the government’s support in finding a job. “That is what I can do. But we would like to have the people back,” said Minister Misiekaba.
