Legislators also expressed their concern about the disappearance of 4.1 kilograms of gold with an estimated value of $400,000. The theft was detected in October 2025. The good was taken out of the Vault and replaced with fake gold. There were no signs of burglary which only strengthens the suspicions that this was an inside job. Despite the seriousness of this case, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. Justice and Safety Minister Harish Monorath confirmed that the police file was sent to the Prosecutor’s Office on January 26th. The Police Force Suriname (KPS) and the minister are still waiting for instructions. The slow progress in this case has caught the attention of parliament. Legislators expressed concern regarding the manner in which sensitive files such as the gold theft, the theft of a huge batch of mercury from a police station and the mass fish deaths in the Saramacca River are being handled. The then CEO of Grassalco, Wesley Rozenhout, was suspended in January in response to the disappearance of gold under his watch and a team of executives was assigned to run the state company.
