PARAMARIBO – The management team at the Diakonessenhuis has cancelled all surgeries and emergency admissions stat due to a serious technical problem in the surgery room. It announced that it is currently impossible to perform surgeries at this hospital.
As a result of the cancellation of all surgeries, temporary guidelines for emergency patients and pregnant women have gone into effect. Women who are 28 to 32 weeks pregnant are referred to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) while women whose pregnancy started 32 weeeks ago or even longer are referred to ’s Lands Hospital.
Emergency cases are being urged to contact t their family doctors or to go to the Emergency Rooms of the other hospitals that are located in the nation's capital. No details were released regarding the nature of the technical problem in the surgery room. Patients are referred to other hospitals that are already at full capacity which means that more pressure is being put on the healthcare system. The management team at the Diakonessenhuis assured the nation that addressing the current problem is a top priority. It is unclear how many surgeries that were scheduled have been cancelled.
