Meanwhile the financial losses as a result of the water damage that is caused by the flooding keeps rising. The residents explained that the water has entered their living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. The water has damaged their furniture, electrical appliances, clothes, school supplies and other possessions. Some families pointed out that they have to watch their possession rot in the water. “We have been living in uncertainty for several days. The water keeps rising and nobody has come to assess the situation. We have sounded the alarm multiple times but nothing has happened”, said a resident. The residents pointed out that they feel abandoned. According to the residents, the drainage system does not receive proper maintenance which is why dozens of families are currently living with their feet in water. The residents fear that the flooding will pose a threat to their health. Some of the residents cannot leave their homes while others have to wade through the water. The residents explained that they need a sustainable solution to prevent their neighbourhood from being flooded after heavy rainfall. “We are not asking for luxury. We are only asking to live safely in our homes without having to fear the water,” said a resident. The families whose homes are flooded hope that their cries for help will be heard and that measures will be taken to address the flooding issue.
