PARAMARIBO – Traffic safety does not start at the primary school but in kindergarten. This is the message that the Traffic Safety Institute (VVI)...

wants to spread with its new strategy that is aimed at providing traffic education to young children. During a visit to the Emelina Daycare Center and Kindergarten School on June 5th the toddlers were not only taught how to cross the street safely but a special manual for traffic education was officially handed over to the school. The VVI received assistance from Officer Jolanda Kempes from the Police Force Suriname (KPS). Kempes gave the toddlers and their teachers instructions on how to move safely in traffic. The manual that was handed over by the coordinators of the project, Xiomara Sahadeo and Pearl Strijdhaftig, has already been included in the curriculum of the state kindergartens and must also find its way to private daycare centers. Purcy Landveld, deputy director at Data, explained that the VVI wants to make sure that toddlers also receive traffic education which is why the teachers will be trained so that they can give the lessons in a professional and effective manner. The head of Emelina, Fariëlle Chaar-Bruining, expressed her gratitude for the project and called it an honor that her school was one of the first ones to receive the manual. VVI Director Joanne Adraai, other workers from the VVI and Officer Karinza Pengel who is a neighborhood manager were also present. The VVI urges private kindergartens to also participate in this special program.
