PARAMARIBO – Hundreds of 10th graders and their parents expressed disappointment when they received the results from the state exam.

Students who scored sufficient marks throughout the school year did not pass to the 11th grade because of their low scores for the state exams. The exam results play an important role in the future of these students as they determine which course they must follow within the education system. Students who had their heart set on course A, B or C often do not get to head in the direction that could land them their dream job as the exam results determine otherwise. Many parents are therefore puzzled by the current criteria and made it clear that they do not understand why the exam results outweigh the overall school performance. They want to know if there are any other alternatives and how they can help their children to make the right choice. But parents are not the only ones who have expressed concern because even the nation’s educators worry about the consequences of the exam results. Dozens of teachers fear that there will be a shortage of seats at the schools when 10th graders who do not pass to the next grade and have to redo the entire grade. Parents hope that the schools and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture will start looking for solutions so that the students can have more options in case they do not pass the state exams.
