to address the use of E-bikes by youths by passing legislation to keep them safe. They explained that a growing number of youths are popping up on the streets on an E-bike but that they do not even know the traffic rules and regulations. “Lately we have been shocked by the number of accidents that left the riders of

E- bikes with serious injuries and that also claimed one life.”  Dwight Samuel who is a youth counselor hopes that parliament will pass a bill that sets an age limit for the use of E-bikes soon.

“I deem it unacceptable for children below the age of 15 to ride an E- bike. It is very dangerous for these children especially given the fact that E-bikes are noiseless in traffic. I also urge parents not to purchase and E-bikes for their young children,” said Samuel. The youth counselors pointed out that the legislation must be given priority so that the police can take action.

“Every day I see a boy of about 13 years and his little brother and sisters going to school on their E-bikes. Do their parents forget the many dangers that lurk in traffic?”

Anouskha Plet wants the same traffic rules and regulations that apply to moped riders to also apply to E-bikes riders.  “People who ride an E-bikes must also wears a helmet. We call on all of the 51 MPs to pass the E-bill before the end of their term so that we could not only have traffic safety but so that our children are also protected in traffic by law.” The minister of Justice and Police also expressed concern regarding the many youths who are popping up in traffic on an E-bike. The youth counselor hopes that the bill will be passed before the start of the new school year.
