PARAMARIBO – Last Monday Regional Development Minister Miquella Soemar-Huur installed 18 new district commissioners. The number of DCs was raised from 18 to 20.
Only two DCs from the previous team were not replaced. These 20 DCs are in charge of running the nation’s 10 districts and their resorts. President Jennifer Simons who was also present at the installation of the new DCs emphasized that they have to serve the people. “You were appointed to serve your community in the district that was assigned to you. You must serve the entire community where you are placed not just the ones who are dear to you such as family or fellow party members,” said President Simons who added that the work is not easy. “That is why you were trained and why we asked the former DCs who already have the necessary experience to guide you and to show you the ropes where that is necessary.” President Simons made it clear that the DCs will be confronted with changes because the decentralization process will be restarted in this period.
“We all make mistakes but if you consciously exploit the nation, you will carry the consequences of your own actions. If you have doubts, you must ask for help because there will be times when you will ask yourself if that which you are about to do is the proper thing to do.”
