PARAMARIBO - After footage which showed pontoons of gold miners had gone vital on social media, the authorities jumped into action last Thursday.
The Ministry of Defense and the Police Force Suriname (KPS) carried out a joint operation in response to the footage. Two pontoons were intercepted on the Corantijn River. One of these pontoons sailed with the Guyanese flag and the other with the Surinamese flag. Shortly after these two pontoons were intercepted, a third pontoon was spotted on the Nickerie River. The police found out that the third pontoon belonged to a Surinamese national. All three pontoons were seized. The joint operation is part of the efforts of the Surinamese intelligence agencies that are aimed at tackling illegal activities along the border with neighboring Guyana and to maintain law and order in the western border region.
