Corruption probe targets Brazil presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro

BRAZIL - Revelations that Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro is under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering rocked his right-wing campaign Friday, just weeks before the October 4 election.

Bolsonaro, son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro, is running against leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. A newly released court document shows police have investigated the 45-year-old senator since July over possible crimes tied to financing a forthcoming flattering biopic about his father. Police conducted dozens of raids Thursday over alleged embezzlement of public funds by the company that produced Dark Horse, starring US actor Jim Caviezel, which has been caught up in a widening corruption scandal hanging over the race. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing: "I have nothing to hide. The film is completely legal." Under Brazilian law, investigations don't bar candidates from running.

His campaign was already hit by disclosures that he approached Daniel Vorcaro, a banker accused of fraud and head of the collapsed Banco Master, for money—which Bolsonaro said was to fund the film. Investigators believe the two met personally to discuss financing, and court documents point to a $12.3 million transfer between companies indirectly linked to Vorcaro and to a brother's attorney. Thursday's raid targets included producer Karina Gama and congressman Mario Frias, the film's executive producer; both are barred from leaving Brazil, and Frias denies wrongdoing. A separate scandal involving Vorcaro's alleged contacts with a Supreme Court judge has triggered a crisis in the top court. Polls show Bolsonaro and Lula neck-and-neck, with crime a top voter concern. A runoff is expected on October 25. (Bssnews)
