District Commissioner Senrita Gobardhan recently made it clear that her hands are tied when it comes to taking action against trucks with an overload of cargo. Trucks that are overloaded with gravel from the districts ...

Saramacca and Coronie deliver their load in the Nickerie District. The DC has already informed the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Justice and Police of the problem which started a while ago. She has also asked the police to take action but the police claim that their hands are also tied because of the lack of rules and regulations. The police can't address the problem without a legal basis to support its actions.
DC Gobardhan explained that there is no equipment to determine the weight of the trucks. In the past the Police Force Suriname (KPS) had the necessary equipment but it was never repaired after it broke down. Bus owners recently asked the DC to take action against the trucks with their heavy loads because these trucks are demolishing the public roads. The DC pointed out that she is not authorized to address this particular issue because the companies that own the trucks are conducting legal activities aimed at exporting gravel to neighbouring Guyana. She also pointed out that clear legislation is required so that she can take firm actions to tackle the issue. Although she also does not condone the destruction that the trucks cause, she is powerless. DC Gobardhan explained that she would have preferred to let the gravel be transported by water.
