PARAMARIBO – Police officials on Sunday decided to move all of the detainees out of the jail house located at the Uitvlugt Police Station in response to the riot that broke out that morning.

Detainees reportedly started rioting around 10 a.m. as they were discontent with the food that they receive and the stricter rules for visitors. They condemned the fact that prison officials imposed a ban on Indo Mie instant noodles. The situation escalated when detainees lifted the cell doors out of the hinges, barricaded the door that leads to the jail house and committed acts of vandalism inside the jail house. During the riot the detainees threw water and garbage at the police officers who were on guard duty. The police decided to take immediate action by transferring all of the detainees to other detention centers. Officials made it clear that the dissatisfaction regarding the food was not a valid reason for the riot because the same meals are delivered to other jail houses by the same supplier and that the inmates in the other jail houses have no complaints about the quality of the food. The police are convinced that several detainees deliberately started the riot in an attempt to escape. They explained that several of the detainees whom they suspect of starting the riot were recently sented to long prison sentences. The police assured the nation that the situation is completely under control.
