PARAMARIBO – “As of July 1st Surinamese citizens who rides e-bikes and other electric vehicles have 6 months to start preparing...

for the new traffic rules as the so called E-bike Act will go into effect on January 1st, 2027,” said Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath. Minister Monorath made it clear that although the new law is generally referred to as the E-bike Act it is aimed at modernizing traffic legislation on a large scale. The new law will be published on July 1st, 2026 but will officially go into effect on January 1st, 2027. Minister Monorath explained that the government deliberately chose for a long transitional period so that citizens, importers and traffic agencies could prepare themselves for the new rules. “We do not want to implement a law without people knowing what it expects of them,” said Minister Monorath who added that the current law is outdated because it does not mention anything about e-bikes, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles.
