PARAMARIBO – The fire that broke out last week at the garbage dump that is located at Charlesburg and which produced a lot of thick smoke is finally under control.

The people who live near the garbage dump complained that they still can’t breathe in fresh air because of all the smoke. They did, however, admit that the smoke has become less thanks to the efforts of the firefighters from the Fire Department Suriname (KBS). Fire Department Spokesman Olton Pinas told Times of Suriname that firefighters are working hard to keep the situation under control. The smoke from the garbage dump has even reached the Mr.Jagernath Lachmonstraat. Pinas explained that the firefighters are doing their job under extremely difficult circumstances. “There is a shortage of equipment, protective clothing and vehicles,” said Pinas. The Geyersvlijt Fire Station has been without a fire engine for over a month. It is also a huge challenge for the firefighters to make their way through all of the garbage. “Colleagues are doing their job among sharp objects, snakes and toxic smoke without the right footwear and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).” The Health Ministry has already urged the people to take preventative measures. People who start to cough or who have difficulty breathing or whose eyes are burning because of the smoke are being advised to seek medical treatment immediately.
