PARAMARIBO - The collapse of the bridge across the Coppename River near Witagron on October 10th is the result of poor monitoring and a violation of the existing rules.
Public Works Minister Stephen Tsang explained that there is a big risk that similar incidents could take place at other locations in Suriname. He also expressed concern over the fact that the bridge at Stolkertsijver could also collapse if a truck with a heavy load were to drive on it. Minister Tsang explained that since 2018 clear rules were introduced to ban truck with heavy loads from driving over the bridge at Witagron. But when the Santokhi administration came into office, the rules were not enforced and heavy trucks could cross the vulnerable bridges. Minister Tsang has discussed the issue with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Justice and Police in order to reintroduce and beef up bridge inspections. The Public Works Ministry also wants to introduce a bridge toll and is currently writing a bill aimed at introducing a bridge toll and a road tall for main roads that lead to the hinterland. The money from the bridge tools will be invested in the maintenance of the nation’s bridges. “Since 2018 there has been a ban on loads of more than 10,000 tons. Since 2018 there was a military post there to keep trucks with heavy loads away from the bridge. Somewhere in 2020 the military post was removed which is why trucks with heavy loads could cross the river via the bridge.” Minister Tsang has reportedly ordered several people from his ministry to evaluate bridges nationwide.
