WASHINGTON - Just months after President Donald Trump returned to office amid a wave of anti-immigration sentiment,...
a new Gallup poll reveals a significant shift in public opinion: a growing majority of Ameri-cans now view immigration as beneficial to the country—including a notable rise in sup-port among Republicans.
According to the poll, 79 percent of U.S. adults currently say that immigration is “a good thing” for the country, up from 64 percent a year ago. This marks the highest level of sup-port recorded in Gallup’s nearly 25-year trend. Meanwhile, only about 20 percent now view immigration as a “bad thing,” down from 32 percent last year.
During the presidency of Democrat Joe Biden, negative attitudes toward immigration had intensified, reaching a peak shortly before Trump’s return to office. The new data indicates a shift back toward more pro-immigrant sentiment, potentially complicating President Trump’s efforts to enact broad anti-immigration measures. Since taking office, President Trump has instructed U.S. Immigration and Customs En-forcement to pursue what he has called “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in history.” His administration has also sought to restrict access to federal benefits for un-documented immigrants, revoke the citizenship of immigrants convicted of crimes, and end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented or temporary-status parents. Despite these hardline policies, the Gallup poll shows waning public support for mass de-portations and related measures, even within Trump's own party. (Jamaica Gleaner)
