The project was a collaboration between the hospital, Lions Club Paramaribo Central, Rudisa International NV and TMS Global NV and was aimed at providing quick access to health care for people with diabetes. The opening of the DTC on the premises of the hospital in the Johan Bodegraven Lane close to the entrance took place in the presence of representatives from Lions, the hospital, donors and social organizations. People who visited the DTC are referred to a specialist based on the results of their diabetes test. Rudisa International NV played a key role in the establishment of the DTC because it financed and built the cabin and also provided the ACs, waiting room, sanitary facilities and roof. Rudisa CEO Warsha Sardjoe emphasized that Rudisa deems this project as its social obligation. “We are happy to contribute to the health of our country. This is a small contribution from Rudisa but the real work will start now. A healthy population is a strong population.” Rudisa COO Jerrel Rotsburg added that Rudisa immediately adopted the project due its importance to the nation. “We know that health is important to the development of our country. That is why we said yes. The unit was built entirely by us. The nation must seize this opportunity. Get tested. Take care of yourself. Together we can do more for the people who need our help the most,” said Rotsburg who added that the DTC “is an investment in the health of our entire nation.” Glenn Tewari, one of the representatives from Lions Club Paramaribo Central, explained why the project is of big importance. “There is a huge demand for dedicated testing centers. People no longer have to walk through the maze within hospital buildings. It is accessible, safe and user friendly. This is exactly what the people need,” said Tewari who added that Lions wants to organize at least 4 testing days each year in order to raise awareness. “We want to reach thousands of people. Diabetes is a global cause within Lions International and we carry that responsibility.”

Tewari revealed that over €25,000 was invested in the DTC Project. “It was an expensive but necessary enterprise.” The Lions Club urge people to make good use of the DTC. “Do not only focus on eating delicious food. Check your blood sugar levels, sport and lead a healthy life.”
