PARAMARIBO – Patricia Etnel, a legislator and prominent member of the National Party Suriname (NPS), died last Sunday morning at the age of 49 jaar. Her health had been declining for some time.
She has no more pain,” said Gregory Rusland, chairman of the NPS. Rusland revealed that the passing of his fellow party member who had work tirelessly for the party and the country as a huge blow. Her passing leaves a huge emptiness within the party and her supporters. Etnel grew up in Pontbuiten, one of the resorts of Paramaribo. She was a Catholic and an altar girl in het church. When she was a teenager she became the second runner up when she participated in a Miss Teen peagant. Etnel also worked as the host of a radio program at SRS and a TV program at the STVS. When she was 16 she founded the Surinaamse Jongeren Organisatie. It was around that time that she moved to the Charlesburg in Paramaribo. She took a course in public administration at the Anton de Kom (Adek) State University. After that she studied governance at the Lim A Po Institute and obtained a Masters degree public administration. Etnel is survived by her three sons. At the age of 16 she became interested in politics after having talked to the then President Ronald Venetiaan. She eventually chose to join the NPS and ran for office for the very first time in 2015. She was selected and became a Member of Parliament. In 2015 she supported a project that was launched by Gregory Rusland and a group of pedagogists and that was aimed at establishing stronger families for a better future. Rusland is not only the chairman of the NPS but he is also the director at the Institute for Development Planning and Management (IDPM). Etnel also worked as a parttime educator and was also working on her final thesis to earn another degree. In 2020 she was reelected as legislator. In September 2024 she decided to take it easy die to health problems. Etnel also decided not to attend all of the sessions of parliament as she wanted to focus on her recovery. "I don't have to attend all of the sessions. I can also do my job via Facebook and YouTube," said MP Etnel. This year she also ran for office and was placed on the second spot of the list of candidates from the NPS. Etnel was reelected to serve another five years as a legislator but sadly passed away one week before the new members of parliament would be sworn in.
