This seizure has raised many questions about the border security and the integrity of police officers. The dangerous cargo was reportedly

smuggled in two trucks from neighboring Guyana into Suriname. MPs are puzzled by the fact that such a huge amount of a chemical substance could be brought into the country undetected. The cyanide was transported by two trucks and the illegal shipment was detected at a checkpoint located at Burnside. MP Rabin Parmessar (NDP) pointed out that the seizure raises many questions about the border security in Nickerie. He also pointed out that “it is cause for concern as not only cyanide but possibly mercury and other chemical substances are also smuggled from Guyana into Suriname.” “What are those men doing in Nickerie? I will soon present concrete evidence regarding the misconduct of many of our men in Nickerie,” said MP Parmessar who praised the police officers who are stationed at the checkpoint at Burnside as they were the ones who intercepted the dangerous cargo. MP Parmessar is demanding answers from the services tasked with protecting the nation’s borders. MP Ebu Jones (NDP) explained that the criticism should not be aimed at the entire police force and reminded parliament that the police officers who are stationed at Burnside are part of the same police force in Nickerie. MP Mahinder Jogi (VHP) reminded parliament that several weeks ago a huge batch of mercury was stolen from a storage facility located on the premises of a police station. He therefore wanted to know how such substances will be guarded after they are intercepted and confiscated.
