PARAMARIBO – Gregory Rusland, chairman of the National Party Suriname (NPS), on Satur-day responded to the statements made by Ronnie Brunswijk, chairman of the ABOP.

“These past five years you didn’t say that the about 30,000 votes of the NPS also had to be taken into account. Why not? Back then you said that the seats were the only thing that mattered because the ABOP had more parliamentary seats.
And now you are suddenly saying that we should form a strong bloc because we have the same amount of seats,” said Rusland. Shortly after the preliminary results of the elections were announced, the ABOP made it clear that it was entitled to key positions within the new coalition that was still under construction. The yellow and black party explained that despite the fact that it and the NPS have the same number of parliamentary seats it has reeled in more votes. The NPS and the ABOP have each reeled in 6 parliamentary seats. The ABOP initially had one thousand more votes than the NPS but meanwhile this number has shrunk to 601. The chairman of the NPS made it clear that he is aware of the criticism regarding the collaboration between his party and the National Democratic Party (NDP) in a new administration. There are still prominent figures within the NPS who still object to a joint venture with the NDP due to the events that took place in the eighties. Rusland also made with clear that the collaboration is in the nation’s best interest. As part of the collaboration with the NDP which has reeled in 18 parliamentary seats, the NPS will get the vice presidency, the substitute post for the vice chairman of parliament, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo).
