PARAMARIBO - The case of a large quantity of mercury that was stolen from a storage facility at a police station still has not been solved.

Parliament and in particular the faction of the National Democratic Party (NDP) recently criticized the government for the lack of information regarding this case. The leader of the NDP faction, Rabin Parmessar, also criticized the government for its failure to provide answers despite the fact that parliament has repeatedly asked several questions. He made it clear that “it is unacceptable that no results have been presented despite the fact that multiple ministries and police units are on this case.” “We demand answers”, said MP Parmessar. MP Ebu Jones (NDP) deemed it incomprehensible that a dangerous substance like mercury could disappear from a police station and warned that failure to shed light on this case could only lead to more speculation regarding the possible involvement of influential people. He made it clear that a transparent investigation is necessary to restore the faith of people in the system. The chairman of parliament, Ashwin Adhin, also expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the lack of information. Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath insisted that “the investigation is ongoing” but proposed sharing confidential information with parliament behind closed doors.
