GUYANA - Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), warned on Sunday that security forces are prepared to act against anyone attempting to...
disrupt the peaceful polls in the upcoming elections. Jagdeo stated that APNU leader Aubrey Norton has threatened trouble if his party does not win. He also noted that Azruddin Mohamed, who is sanctioned by the U.S. for gold smuggling and public corruption, claimed a poll shows he will win the presidency and warned of unrest if he loses.
At a large Election Rally in Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, Jagdeo promised supporters that those who create trouble after a decisive PPP victory would face serious consequences. He recalled the 2020 events when APNU/AFC allegedly tried to steal the elections, asserting that the PPP/C is ready to confront such challenges again. Jagdeo emphasized the stakes of the elections and urged Guyanese to consider what life would be like without PPP/C governance over the past five years.
He highlighted PPP/C plans to deliver cash grants, higher pensions, more support for children, housing and land opportunities, improved infrastructure (drains, lighting, security cameras, garbage collection), better jobs, transportation, and services such as health and education. The PPP/C argues it has a track record of delivering on promises.
Jagdeo also addressed various demographic groups, arguing that discrimination occurred under APNU+AFC from 2015–2020 and that Amerindian, Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, miners, farmers, and youth are now benefiting under the PPP/C. He linked Azruddin Mohamed’s candidacy to tax evasion and OFAC sanctions, questioning whether he would be on the ballot in any other sane country.
Mohamed, WIN’s presidential candidate, faces charges for allegedly undervaluing a Lamborghini and submitting forged documents to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). He has pleaded not guilty. OFAC sanctioned Nazar Mohamed and his son in 2024 for gold export tax evasion. (Inewsguyana)
