PARAMARIBO – “The Regional Hospital Wanica must become fully operational within a short period of time,” said Minister André Misiekaba...

who explained that the Health Ministry is currently addressing several structural issues such as the lack of a road to the hospital and the shortage of medical specialists. “The hospital is operational but not yet at full capacity,” said Minister Misiekaba who added that the hospital plays a key role in regional healthcare as it must also admit patients from Wanica, Para, Brokopondo and even Sipaliwini. One main problem is the poor infrastructure because there is no adequate road that connects the hospital and the highway. This not only makes it very difficult to transport patients but it also makes it difficult for people to reach the hospital. “The construction of that road is part of the original construction project but was not carried out due to unknown reasons,” said Misiekaba.
Meanwhile Public Works Minister Stefan Tsang has agreed to make the construction of this road a top priority. Besides infrastructure the ministry is also focusing on hiring medical specialists. “We are holding talks with physicians who are willing to also offer their services in Wanica. That is not simple especially given the shortage of specialists and the uneven spread among the nation’s hospitas,” said Minister Misiekaba who expects the progress to become visible in the first semester of 2026. “Every region deserves qualitative and accessible healthcare. The Wanica Hospital must make that possible for this area.”
